Cardinal Hill
The renovation of this classic, 1970s contemporary style house proved to be a challenge to respect the style yet find new expressions for the materials.

The Starting Point
Imaging what is possible while looking at what is there is not always easy.
As we studied the existing condition, we realized that it was more important to keep the substance of innovation rather than abide by the superficial stylistic decisions.
The Beauty of Construction - learning what can be done.
We searched for a use of cement board that would minimize the amount of material necessary. How can we respect the design substance while still innovating with a new material?
A House Tells a Story
The subtle irregularities of the exposed nailing pattern are evidence of hand-craft. The crafting of the new details emphasizes the craft in the design and construction of the original house.
A Focus of Detail
As people approach a building, it should reveal progressively more detail. The detail should reveal itself in a progressively more human scale.
Because of a limited budget, the entry porch was a focus of detail - the human scale revealed a one approached.
The Places that People Touch
In a design, there are place that people are supposed to touch. This handrail detail was designed to provide a track for the thumb and fingers. A place to touch.
