A Story Through Art

We transformed this 1970s townhouse in Princeton, NJ into a story of the world travels of the owners.

Entry as an Art Gallery

As they traveled, they collected sculptures, paintings and other artifacts.
The entry of the home has been transformed into a sculpture display leading the eye and the person up the stairs to the main living room. We introduced a series of stepping display shelves - irregular in size and height - to allow for a rotating exhibit of different works from their collection. This transformed the entry sequence into a story of the owner's lives in travel.

The House Tells the Story of the Travels of the Owners

The idea of display was continued throughout the house, allowing for small "surprises" in the detailing of the space and the method of display.

Details Reinforce the Story

We all felt that the best expression for the space was to keep a simple black & white color palate, In effect, we made the space a blank canvas so that their eclectic collection of art and furniture would become the primary feature throughout the home.

Each Space is a Different Chapter of the Story

Spaces throughout the house become the Chapters in the Book of the owner’s travels - When… Where.

A Place to Reflect

As we discussed the renovation, I learned that the husband liked to soak in the tub. He was frustrated that the master bath was separated from the outside - no natural light.

Through the Design process we proposed that a window in the wall of the bathroom could allow a view the outside - a please to relax… a place to see light… and a place to reflect.
